Escaping Into the Open- The Art of Writing True
by Elizabeth Berg
This wonderful little book is just crammed full of ideas, wisdom, and little pushes for writers to get going. Elizabeth Berg is one of my favorite fiction writers of all time, and this book lets us in on all her little secrets for making characters as believable as you and me, and for getting your own soul down on paper. When I finished reading this, I thought to myself, "I can do this too!" (and I am!)

The Sound of Paper
by Julia Cameron
This book is clearly influenced by Natalie Goldberg (see below for her books). Both books are great for artists of all kinds, helping them focus and giving good prompts. Cameron is a writer who has wrestled with her own devils and survived to give the rest of us roadmarks along the way.

Writing Down the Bones
by Natalie Goldberg
No writer on earth should be without Natalie's books. My favorite is Writing Down the Bones. Goldberg helps us to pay attention to the tiny details that make up our daily lives, and to learn to capture them so that we can show, not tell, others, thereby allowing them to enter into our experiences. Both of her books (this one and Wild Mind) are an open invitation to find and explore one's creativity and a jump-start for the stuck or scared.

In the Palm of Your Hand: The Poet's Portable Workshop
by Steve Kowit
What it says in the title: need a jump start, you're bound to find something here. Not as great as Natalie Goldberg, but good enough to keep around for when you just need something different to try.

Wild Mind: Living the Writer's Life
by Natalie Goldberg
I love Natalie's books. She encourages you to write what you know. Her chapters are short and easy to read so you can read them in small spurts. You will want to go write a book after reading this one!

Wild Mind: Living the Writer's Life
by Natalie Goldberg
This book's subtitle is just right. It's a very inspiring read about what it
really means to be a writer, deep in your soul. Goldberg has wonderful
stories to tell about her own development as a writer that made me feel
like I was not alone in the solitary lifestyle of a writer. She also has a way
of presenting writing exercises that really challenged me to ask more from
myself and my commitment to expressing myself through writing.

PoemCrazy
by Susan Goldsmith Wooldridge
Reading this book was an amazing experience. Her wonderful stories
about writing touched me on a deep level and the writing exercises got
me more excited about words than I had ever been. This is one book I
read over and over and always get something new from it.

Bird by Bird
by Anne LaMott
This is a wonderful book about words, writing, and the writing life. LaMott's
edgy, deeply spiritual, yet often irreverent style is so engaging and thought-provoking.
After I read this book, I found myself making more connections
with objects and people around me...and wanting to write about them.
