ARTELLAGRAM 9-27-08:
"In the Studio"
An Interview with Artist Lori Barker

(This interview is continued from the September 27 2008 Artellagram...)

Artella: When did you start working with images of angels? How did this inspiration begin?

Lori: Angels have always been part of my life but I was made aware of them during a car accident.

A SECOND CHANCE is a piece I wrote and may explain to you why angels have been the main theme of my art since 1997. Five angels protected me that day and now I wish to honor THEM with my art and by sharing their energies through my healing art.

The shutter speed is set at 5 seconds.
The iris is wide open as the events unfold.
She sits as if a passenger without control, speeding over asphalt,
Cement walkways and through chains no longer restricting.
The shutter is then stilled,
Unable to see the transition from horizontal to vertical.
Where was the framed image of those moments?
Who were the forces holding her body safe from the rising waters?
Who took away the fear and left a wonderment of the future.
She was told it wasn't her time and a second chance was given,
A gift of life and a responsibility to touch others.

Artella: Is it important to be in a good mood when you're creating?

Lori: Each artist is different. I need complete quiet, clear head and 'in the zone' for my creative juices to flow. That said, there are times when I'm cleaning out my studio and find inspiration or when teaching with others chattering away, a spark may come through. I may not be in a great mood when I start a project but the act of creating brings to me a joyful mood.

Artella: Do you plan ahead when you're creating, or does your art unfold more spontaneously?

Lori: I rarely sketch a design; I usually see it develop as I get out the materials. Many times the materials themselves point me the direction. If I'm stuck on a project, I'll 'program' my dreams and usually have a solution in the morning.

Artella: Looking at your life, and your artwork, five years from now, do you think there will be significant changes?

Lori: In the past, I changed my craft about every 6 years in order to keep my work alive. For 10 years I had created a very successful and popular line of jewelry but stopped when I knew I couldn't put out a product with the magic still intact. Customers deserve the best and will recognize when the spark isn't there any more.

If or when I'm not guided to do my artful angels or my photos engraved on metal, I see myself joyfully involved in any other media that comes to me. I usually place a sticker on the back of all my originals that state: 'through the hands of Lori Barker', for I'm only a conduit.

Isn't it wonderful to anticipate the mysteries of life and what will come through next!
