ARTELLAGRAM 10-17-09:
"In the Studio"
An Interview with Artists Joyce Bookie & Virginia Reese (aka 2 Ssisters Things)

(This interview is continued from the October 17 2009 Artellagram...)

Artella: If you were not limited by anything (i.e., time, money, supplies, location), what kind of art would you be creating right now? Is there some kind of technique or media that you've never done before that you've always wanted to try?

Virginia: I would love to be able to create one of a kind dolls.

Joyce: I would love to be able to create one of a kind dolls.

Artella: What advice do you have for people who think it's too late to follow their creative dreams?

Joyce and Virginia: Don’t ever stop following your art.  Both of us have been creating since an early age and now that we are into our fifties we are still trying new ideas and new mediums.  As we get older our lives change and we have different priorities but always follow your heart to your art, don't ever be afraid to try something new.

Artella: How do you organize your materials? What are you best organizational tips?

Joyce: I actually have several different methods of organizing. I like to keep my small pieces in the small drawer type cabinets designed for hardware.  I use drawers designed for scrapbooking for papers and flat pieces.  One of my new favorites is an old wooden piece designed for holding cassette tapes to hold my game cards in. I like to keep like things together.  I use lots of clear plastic organizers so I can see what I have.  When I get new items I like to find a resting place right away.  I usually try to stay on top of keeping things organized or else it is much more difficult to create.

Artella: What is your daily routine? Do you create art every day?

Joyce and Virginia: Both of us are early risers often being able to work on a project before the rest of our family is up and moving. Once husbands and children are gone for the day it is off to the studio for a few hours, run necessary errands, do those household chores, then once things are quiet again in the evening we try to sneak away again.  We both do some type of art everyday.

Artella: How can we encourage art and creativity in young children?

Joyce and Virginia: We both have children or grandchildren living in our homes.  When our children want to try a project we provide the necessary supplies and instructions and then step back.  Maybe their artistic attempts will not look like yours but they will be so proud.  Virginia's 7 year old grandson has made some beautiful needle felted pictures,  Joyce's 13 year old son prefers mixed media collages, and her 13 year old daughter loves making jewelry.  By providing the supplies and encouragement it won’t be long before they will need their own studio and be impressing the art teachers at school, not to mention having a great time creating and spending time with you.
