Arlene L. Mandell

Arlene L. Mandell is a former New Yorker, now living in sunny retirement in Santa Rosa, CA. October Renaissance
by Arlene L. Mandell

Thick clouds rolling in from the ocean blanket

spent roses. By morning the first rain polishes

manzanita branches till they glisten like sunlight

piercing a glass of burgundy wine. Rocks don

viridian moss coats, mushrooms emerge, orange

salamanders scurry.

Once again the olives have been pressed, the

walnuts gathered and the caves filled with oaken

casks of new wine to age slowly in the Valley of

the Moon. Wood smoke drifts through the bay

laurels. Owls call.

SECOND PLACE WINNER

Let's Drive Together
by Jamie Pachomski

When we crash words the collision leaves scars
so deeply at times that sodden with shock
we abandon the scene in separate cars
scoffing at the harmony of bluebirds
we carefully slice the story into thirds
yours, mine and the truth
set ablaze amid the distant stars
we attempt to demystify the purpose behind our silent, wasting hours
nevertheless
the meandering road in which we travel
reminds us that the drive alone is quite desolate
as the sign ahead reminds that validation is like chocolate, only much more sweet
and with open hearts we embrace a resolution that at last will unravel
prompting the quick and familiar return to the safety
of our love's passenger seat.

America the Dutiful
by Sari Grandstaff

If it doesn't make cents,
it doesn't make a difference.
You get all dollared up,
sweet as money for your big date
your breath so fresh
from an after-dinner mint,
I don't ever want to loot you.

Sure even the children know,
good parents, we ad-ucate them.
You can telemom anything
oh please, give me
a commercial break already
our soldiers die for this?
It's bomb approved
American values can't be taught
but they can be bought

Talk to your doctor
there's always medicoin for that.
We'll buck you up when you're down,
hey, are you having fund yet?

Food-stamped
with the seal of disapproval
we make our way
along dangerous roads
without sidewalks
well-universed
in the defiances and inhumanities
we grip our plastic bags tightly
and fly across the highway
to the island on the other side

FOURTH PLACE WINNER

Against Time
by Linda Li

It's twelve past one
And the battle has been fought
We asked endless questions
And dreamt hopeless thoughts

We searched for the answers
That refuse to exist
And our heads turned back
As memories reminisced
We watched the sky darken
And the light begin to fade
Our smiles of hope
Becoming a mere masquerade
We pleaded for love
But were so heartlessly rejected
ur lives were shortened
Our fate unexpected

It was twelve past one
When our minds filled with doubt
The clock stopped ticking
And our time ran out
