ARTELLAGRAM 8-13-08:
Art Tip:
Wishing Muse Instructions

(This project is continued from the August 13 Artellagram"...)

To create this altered book page:

1. Ask your friend (or yourself) to tell you her biggest wishes.

2. Consolidate each wish into one word, and look up that word in the dictionary. Copy the dictionary definition and cut it out.

3. Decide what you will use to frame the “wishes”. I used the lids to tiny storage containers (they were sold as containers for beads or small craft items).

4. Determine the basic layout of your page. My page included five framed “wishes”, a tag in a cloth pocket, a focal image of the “Wish Muse” (which was an image with rub-on letters applied to it), and other decorative papers and elements.

5. Your method for creating the niches (i.e., depressions cut into the book) will depend on what you are using to frame the definitions. I found a circle punch that was the exact size of the lids I was using, and I punched several pages at a time, until enough pages were punched to hold the lids. Then I glued all those pages together. A more traditional approach to creating niches, however, is to glue the pages together first, and then cut the niches with a sharp cutting instrument, such as an X-Acto knife.

6. After gluing the pages together (I used YES glue), allow the book to dry thoroughly. Then adhere the dictionary definitions to the bottom of each niche, and fit the frames in snuggly.

7. Complete the other elements on your page.
