ARTELLAGRAM 2-21-09: Art Tip: Xylophone Self-Portrait
Instructions
(This project is continued from the February 21, 2009, Artellagram...)
Here are the steps to create your own self-portrait out of a deconstructed toy xylophone:
1. Determine a background for your layout. I made a collage out of different papers, and included a painted figure silhouette, made with a stencil.
2. Find a toy xylophone at a thrift store or garage sale, and take it apart, so that you'll be able to use the xylophone bars independently. But be careful! I cut myself pretty badly when I took apart my xylophone, bringing new meaning to the concept of "putting blood, sweat, and tears into the piece". Ouch! :-)
3. Fasten the xylophone bars to your background with decorate brads, placing them in a "stick figure" shape.
4. Add a photo of your face to the page, in the position for the head.
5. Add other embellishments as you like. I looked through an old book to find phrases that I added to each "xylophone body part".
The phrases I selected were:
ecstasy of peace
lighter of heart
you may sing a song
and then I was happy
I wanted all to sparkle and dance
happy countenance
This is something like your paradise
I also added dictionary definitions for "xylophone" and "muse" and mounted them on a colorful piece of paper that I attached to the background with foam tape, to make it pop a bit.
