ARTELLAGRAM 1-13-10:
Art Tip:
Inspiration from the Outside
"Heavy Load Muse" Muse Instructions

(This project is continued from the January 13, 2010, Artellagram...)

My "Heavy Load Muse" is an acrylic painting on a 14" x 11" canvas!

Here are steps for making your own Heavy Load Muse:

1. Plan out your design. This may mean making a pencil sketch on the canvas, or, if you prefer to work more spontaneously, simply planning in your head a general idea of the composition of your piece.

2. Create the background, first. I started with big blocks of color, reminiscent of the style of the artist Mondrian.

3. Create outlines of the main elements in the piece. In my painting, this included the central figure, palm tree, turtle, and dolphin.

4. Fill in the outlines with the colors and techniques of your choice. I created the "mosaic" look in several of the key elements in this painting by filling them in with tiny shapes in coordinating colors. Then, when they were all dry, I went back with black paint and outlined the tiny shapes, using a small brush. To get the "mosaic" look, aim for shapes that are very small and non-uniform.

5. Outline all elements again, with black paint. Use a small brush.

6. To add a touch of whimsy, add some swirls or a similar doodle-type pattern. Paint the swirls, allow to dry, and then outline them in a contrasting color.

7. I photographed the painting, then cropped it and added the text in Photoshop, selecting a font that matched the tone of the painting.
