Stories That Literally Move Us (Terry Jordan)

The ancient art of storytelling comes to life in this dynamic, experiential workshop. Not only will participants have an opportunity to hear stories but also to share them. Here we will learn through movement and practice where, in our bodies, stories are stored and how they emerge. We will then use that awareness to allow our creative, abundant true selves to blossom more fully.

There is great power in the words we choose. Stories use that power to align us with the abundance and prosperity that is already present, just waiting for us to notice.

Earth Shrines: Enchanting Your Spirit with Natural Art Materials (Melissa Chapin)

This is a delicious opportunity to reengage the unbounded artistic and spiritual inspirations and resources of the natural world. The basic elements of life -- earth, wind, air, fire, and spirit -- offer infinite resources to the artist in each of us. They are the foundation of life and yet we easily become tied down by the rush of our busy, technological word. How often do we hurry by with no more than a glance to the changing skies and vibrant seasons? How often do we fail to honor our own transitions and the dynamic seasons of our lives? Today we will pause and rest to discover an artistic foundation in the natural world.

We begin by taking a wakeful journey among forest floors and ebbing oceans to awaken our senses. Explore sacred, playful creative materials from the earth--stones, wood, shells, feathers, leaves from the glorious New England autumn and much more! Then join us to build a personal shrine or sculpture embodying your connections to the world, honoring your seasons and the transitions and sacredness of everyday life.

Come to relax, explore, rejuvenate, create, and to be inspired! All necessary materials will be provided at the workshop to create your shrine or sculpture. You are, however, invited and encouraged to bring along special materials, objects, and earthen materials to use or share with others. Materials fee $15, to be paid prior to November 1.

Melissa Chapin is a mixed media artist who exhibits her ardor for color and the natural world in her assemblage paintings, sculpture, alternative photography, and artist books. She gracefully incorporates fine arts as well as found objects and ephemera in a reverential, often contemplative response to life and the dynamic landscapes of her native Vermont and adopted New York City home. Melissa is an Artist-in-Residence for the Creative Center for People with Cancer in Manhattan and a frequent Artella contributor.

Flesh Reflecting the Soul: Telling the Truth and Finding Abundance in Art (Denise Mihalik)

What is your truth? Do you know? Are you capable of expressing it? DO YOU FEEL IT? Do you want to feel it more? Do you want to let go and have it all out on paper?

Coming to terms with your truth in art is often difficult.
How do we honor what is living in us?
  • even if it doesn't look like the "norm"
  • even if some people don't get it
  • even if we don't think we are enough
  • or even if we think we are too much

In this workshop, I'll tell you my story, we'll tell each other our stories, and then we'll make art with polaroids and watercolors, words, images, and moments. We’ll make art that speaks of who we are, and make it together.

Whether you are a painter, writer, sculptor, musician, photographer…doesn't matter.
    This is a time
  • to create unafraid
  • with wild abandon
  • to tell your story
  • A lively open forum for
    • FUN
    • FREE
    • creating

Community Sculpture Project

During the day, we will all have the opportunity decorate small blocks with writing, art, and the expressions of our individual selves. On our final evening together, we will create a communal sculpture out of the blocks, in the tradition of 'temporary art" such as Buddhist sand paintings which are created and then swept away in honor of the temporary and dynamic nature of life. We'll then trade blocks amongst ourselves, to take home the work of others as remembrances of the the weekend.
