FIRST PLACE WINNER

Mary Rowin

Memory Weave
*For Dad, Who Died on June 18, 1984

What's it like, this memory?

Like little fishes swimming
through gauze openings
that thicken over time.
They are there, in my dreams,
in my reverie,
moving in and out of the weave.
Just there, reminding me.

A ship is down,
sitting on the ocean floor.
A ship should sail
but fishes swim
through these portholes.

Walk this deck with me once again.
Fill me with wisdom before we feel the tilt
as the ship
sinks
below
the surface.

Let me taste your spirit; it will sustain me.
I turn back and something scaly slides past my cheeks.
The fishes who remind me.

SECOND PLACE WINNER

Jenny Ryan

Splendiferous Life

Purple skin waterfall of
Creamy satin passion.

Pines chime in a
Confident, enamored universe.

The sensual ocean resonates a
Butterfly's sparkling life
On a flowing, easy beach.

THIRD PLACE WINNER

Ann McGovern

Halfway

I stop whatever I am doing.
Pretend love is passé,
Slurp an egg cream,
Weep wicked words onto paper,
Find an artichoke curled on a Grecian urn.
Discover a new continent of violins and chocolate,
Swim to the bend in a river of glass,

How can I find the path?
Half-blind,
I cloud my way to the smallest jungle,
See green spots on the legs of an orange frog.
The frog leaps.

I am halfway there.

FOURTH PLACE WINNER

Kim Gelinas

DREAMS

There in the distance,
I can see my dreams
They call me forth
Summoning me

Showing me all that can be
Showing me what my soul already knows
The beauty that permeates this world
The beauty that permeates me

My dreams grow impatient
Where are you? They ask
Why are you not working toward us?
Why are you so afraid?

I feel the longing, the need
Pulling, beckoning, urging
Doing its very best to
Drag me from my comfort zone

Refusing to go unanswered
Refusing to be quiet
Demanding action
Demanding resolution

Spirit engulfs my soul
Lighting the path before me
Infusing me with courage
Imparting its strength
